Pileus often woolly-squamulose, surface conspicuously darkening with alkali; lamellae broadly adnate to subdecurrent; stipe usually shorter than pileus diameter; pleurocystidia absent; necropigmented basidia present; cheilocystidia arising as terminal elements of the hyphae of the hymenophoral trama and usually <50 mm in length; spores smooth, hilar appendix inconspicuous. Temperate areas of the northern and southern hemispheres, tropical Africa, tropical southeast Asia, Australasia, not recorded from Nothofagus zones of the southern hemisphere.
